On International Literacy Day, September 8, 2023, the US Library of Congress unveiled the esteemed winners and honorees of the 2023 Literacy Awards. Compassion Books and the House of Wisdom Program from Vietnam have earned the distinguished accolade in the Successful Practice Honorees category.

The Library of Congress established the Literacy Awards in 2013 with the paramount goal of promoting the significance of a robust reading culture in advancing literacy, a fundamental human educational right and the cornerstone of lifelong learning.

These awards acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments and contributions of non-profit organizations in the realm of promoting reading, lifelong learning, and expanding knowledge horizons, thereby stimulating greater collaboration among like-minded entities dedicated to ensuring equal educational opportunities for all, ultimately enhancing the development of communities, nations, and humanity.

The House of Wisdom Thanh Tiên hosted a cultural and educational exchange with volunteer lecturer Ian Gardiner from New York, USA, on February 20, 2023.

This momentous achievement represents an international commendation for Compassion Books and the House of Wisdom Program. Over the years, the Compassion Books Program has orchestrated the creation of an extensive network of 19,681 bookcases, stocked with more than 1.1 million books, in over 3,000 schools and communities. Their efforts extend beyond simply mobilizing financial and human resources to curate and deliver quality books to readers; they also offer invaluable professional guidance to schools and localities on optimizing reading spaces, measuring students' daily reading time, instituting reading promotion policies, and organizing engaging reading and experiential activities. The Compassion Books Program has opened doors to libraries and quality books for more than 2.2 million readers across 60 out of 63 provinces in Vietnam and one province in Laos.

Compassion Books donates books to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

Meanwhile, the House of Wisdom Program operates a network of 151 community learning spaces across six countries, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. These "Houses" have established an extensive lifelong learning ecosystem, offering a plethora of activities ranging from libraries to free in-person and online classes on essential life subjects, scholarships for dedicated participants, cultural and educational exchange talk shows featuring leading experts, sports, art, martial arts clubs, local culture "museums," STEM education, experiential summer camps, and much more. These initiatives have cultivated free reading and lifelong learning communities, providing millions of children and individuals access to quality, equitable education.

The Successful Practices Conference will occur at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., USA, on October 18, 2023. Representatives from Compassion Books and the House of Wisdom Program will attend to deliver speeches at the Award Ceremony and engage in exhibition activities, presenting their programs to international allies.
