In answering questions from Vietnamese and international reporters regarding the Chinese vessel Haiyang Dizhi 8's resumption of its violation of the Vietnamese Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf, the spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang stated:
According to information from the Vietnamese competent authorities, since 13 August 2019 the Chinese survey vessel Haiyang Dizhi 8 and its escort vessels have resumed their violation of the maritime zones of Viet Nam, which completely fall under Viet Nam’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction as established according to relevant provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Viet Nam has made representations to China, protesting against its repetition of that serious violation. Viet Nam has also demanded China pull its vessels out of the maritime zones of Viet Nam and respect Viet Nam’s sovereign rights, jurisdiction and all other lawful and legitimate rights and interests as enshrined under UNCLOS and international law.
The Vietnamese competent authorities continue implementing measures to exercise our sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in accordance with Vietnamese law and international law. Viet Nam affirms its valuing of peace, security and the rule of law in the East Sea and its goodwill to settle the differences through peaceful means. Viet Nam consistently attaches importance to and yearns for the promotion of the friendly relations with China in the interest of both countries and their peoples as well as for the sake of peace, stability and security in the region and the world. At the same time, Viet Nam resolutely and persistently defend its lawful and legitimate rights and interests. Viet Nam calls upon all countries concerned and the international community to make positive contribution to the maintenance of peace, stability and cooperation in the East Sea, the region and the world.
