The information was heard during a meeting held by the Central Council for Emulation and Rewards in Ha Noi on February 20 to discuss the body’s key tasks for 2020.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who heads the Council, touched upon the situation of COVID-19 as well as Vietnam’s prevention and control efforts against the epidemic.

He stated that right before the Lunar New Year (Tet), the Government leader convened meetings with ministries and sectors, and delivered drastic and comprehensive directions concerning the fight against COVID-19, highlighting the spirit of “fighting the disease is like fighting enemies”.

Vietnam has mobilized the involvement of the entire political system in the mission, with nearly 90 field hospitals having been established thus far, he said, noting that this has helped the country to successfully control the disease right from the grassroots level, receiving high consensus and support among the people.

Among the 16 confirmed infection cases in Vietnam, 14 have been successfully cured and discharged from hospital, including a three-month-old baby, the PM elaborated.

Vietnam’s effective efforts in fighting the epidemic, scientific research and infrastructure arrangement have been highly appreciated by the World Health Organization, he added.

PM Phuc said that immediately after the first two cases of coronavirus infections in Vietnam (Chinese people) were successfully cured, he decided to reward the doctors of the Cho Ray Hospital for the feat.

In addition, the Government leader asked the head of the Central Emulation and Reward Board to submit to him a proposal on commending the flight crew who performed the international mission of transporting the relief goods from the Government of Vietnam to China and bringing 30 Vietnamese citizens home. Also, the Standing Vice Chairperson of the Central Council for Emulation and Rewards proposed rewards to the team of doctors who were on board to provide medical examination for these citizens.

At the meeting, the Council will listen to objective analyses and assessments concerning the success and shortcomings in the emulation work. PM Phuc asked delegates to propose solutions to improve the quality and effectiveness of emulation, and discuss the organization of the 10thNational Patriotic Emulation Congress on the occasion of the 13th National Party Congress.

Participants will also talk orientations for the building and completion of the revised Law on Emulation and Commendation in accordance with the reality and the legal order.

As reported by the Council, the reward work has been promptly implemented in service of the political tasks of the Party and State, as well as ministries, sectors and localities. In 2019, the PM and the State President commended 110,435 cases. Of the individuals rewarded for socio-economic development tasks, the proportion of thematic and irregular rewards was 8.79%, and commendations for workers, farmers and direct employees accounted for more than 25%.
